Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering in Ellensburg, WA

I would like to give a huge round of kudos and thank yous to Alan Halvorson who arranged the downtown venues at Spirit of the West February 17-19, 2012 in Ellensburg. Alan did a magnificent job not only as a performer but for WMA members by going to meetings and providing an opportunity for many musicians and poets to perform. It is because of Alan's tireless attendance on the Spirit of the West board that we had so many places to share our music and poetry. THANK YOU, ALAN. Your effort was very deeply appreciated. - Report from Lauralee Northcott

Greetings, WMA Columbia Chapter members, and Happy New Year!
I’m writing to remind you that it’s never too early to start planning for:

Cowboy Poetry Week 2012

This year it will run April 15th through 21st. Your 2012 CPW committee (Ned Bodie, Lynn Kopelke, Susan Matley (me) and Duane Nelson) will be posting event updates at this site over the coming weeks, so if you’ve booked an event celebrating Cowboy Poetry Week, let us know! State Proclamations of Cowboy Poetry Week are currently being solicited for Oregon and Washington. I encourage each of you to apply to the mayor of your city or town for a local Proclamation, too, as a means of building public awareness; if you’d like some “boilerplate” as a starting point for this process, e-mail me
at smatley@columbiainet.com.

Now is a good time to contact local libraries, schools, museums, civic organizations, etc., to set up a CPW event. Musicians, don’t be shy, lyrics tell the story of the west, too! If there’s another WMA Columbia Chapter member living near you, get in touch with each other to schedule a joint event!! For additional guidance, http://cowboypoetry.com/week.htm is an excellent resource (including how to involve your local library in the rural library project).

Already on the books:

Tuesday, April 17th

Dayton, WA-Dayton Community Library, 3 PM kids cowboy poetry writing and recitation session (Bruce & Susan Matley)
Prescott, WA-Prescott Rural Library’s fifth annual community cowboy poetry event, 7 PM, Lions Hall, featuring local cowboy musicians and poets, poetry contest and more (Bruce & Susan Matley)

Wednesday, April 18th

Woodinville, WA-Regional Poetic Bash April 18. Sponsored by PoetsWest @ The Creekside (18200 Woodinville-Snohomish Road NE Woodinville, WA 98072) (Clark Crouch as featured poet; details to come).

Thursday, April 19th

Dayton, WA-Dayton Community Library, 6:30-8:00 PM, cowboy poetry reading for adults (Bruce & Susan Matley)

Best wishes to you all. Now get out there and get bookin’!

Performance Opportunities

A primary objective of the Columbia WMA Chapter is to provide performance venues and opportunities for its members. In furtherance of this, a Venues Committee was formed on June 13, 2010 to encourage, promote, and mentor house concerts and other performance venues throughout the region served by the Chapter.

The committee, composed of Dallas McCord as chair, PJ McCord, Keeter Stuart, Sherry Walker, and Lauralee Northcott, held its initial meeting in Stevenson, WA at the Chapter's first membership meeting.

Offers to host or chair events or suggestions as to suitable venues would be most welcome!
